Kubernetes knows how to handle applications that map to built-in concepts like Pods, Jobs, Deployments, Stateful Sets, and more.

But what if none of existing resource definitions fully fit for a system we want to run? Such scenarios are not uncommon and we need to be ready to address them.

Does your system need special logic for managing state to be consistent, available, durable, and fault-tolerant? Does your system require certain lifecycle rules to function properly?

Good news is we can teach Kubernetes API how to handle systems that need special care. Let's explore how Custom Resource Definitions and Custom Controllers can help implement this logic and look at Open Source examples!
